About Nielson Finish Carpentry

Ken Nielson  began his love for construction as a young boy working by his father's side on a variety of home improvement projects. Once he graduated from vocational/trade school training with a degree in Mechanical Drafting, he soon realized that this was not to be his future trade.

It took his first full-time job with a local construction company to plant the seed of his love for all-around construction work. Ken, as any newcomer to a trade, started from the ground-up. He learned all aspects of the building trades, including concrete work, carpentry, drywall, insulation work and roofing activities.
After years of working for other construction firms, he started his own company in 1991. This was the beginning of Nielson Finish Carpentry. Ken's love for the finish carpentry scope of work had its beginnings planted at this time. It was at this point that Ken refined his skills as a true craftsman and immersed himself in being a problem-solver when faced with complex jobs. He prides himself with being a "team player", as he frequently must weave his skills in with those of other tradesmen in the delicate balance of getting a job done in a timely fashion and with perfection. Ken prides himself with being a punctual professional, often arriving to a project early and fully prepared to begin his craft. He blends a fine skillset with a sociable nature and a dry sense of humor. To him, this is the essence of getting a job completed and being a true craftsman.

Ken, his wife, Karla, and their 3 dogs love living the island lifestyle that living on Whidbey Island so freely offers. He looks forward to extending his skills and his craft to his neighbors so that they can enjoy having beautified and more functional home environments. To him, this is another way to meet and cultivate new friendships and be involved in his community.

With two projects completed, a kitchen cabinetry remodel (part of a complete remodel) and a bedroom to a home office conversion, we decided to have Nielson Finish Carpentry do another project for us. This time it was a TV Entertainment center. Not liking a TV hanging on the wall or the look and consntruction of the meny entertainment cabinets we decided on a style that fit a large area, accommodate a 60" TV, hold serveral entertaimment componets all with a clean and simple style. A design and functionality were agreed upon. The cabinet is one piece and eleven feet in length. Special tempered glass was installed on the doors for safety and is was friendly to infrared remote controls. Back lighting was added later which makes the cabinet stand out even more. Having a cabinet made this way allows for having the TV were you want it and house componets as needed. We were very pleased with the result and have received many compliments on it.

Two separate appraisals were recently made on my home. The appraisers, on each occasion raved about the trim work Ken Nielson, has done in my home. One even exclaimed that he had been to countless homes just that day and has never seen finer work anywhere.

Ken has done cabinetry, a gorgeous floating fireplace mantel, new doors within and to the outside of my home, stair railing, recessed cabinetry in a wall, crown molding, base molding, wainscoting, and has expertly dealt with some dry rot repairs needed to the floors. He even did an artistic glass tile job on an old patio table that I was about to throw out. He installed my old kitchen cabinets in the garage and did it so creatively and well that it's another thing everyone raves about. I wanted to have a nice trim around some of my old florescent light fixtures and now some people wish they had done the same and not gone to the cans when they upgraded. Ken also has done custom made furniture and remade pieces for me. He also made shutters for the outside of my house.

Ken is always on time. Works hard and fast, and to me, his prices are very reasonable for the high quality you end up with. I am just sorry he moved too far away; so if you are up there in Washington where he lives now, don't hesitate to call him! You are very lucky to have him. He has done work for me in California for over 20 years on so many projects that the "How much did the project cost?" question below would be hard to evaluate.

Ken built all the cabinets in our entire house including the kitchen, baths, built-in casework in the bedrooms and hallways. We couldn't have asked for a better job. Ken has excellent skills, is reliable, very professional and loves a good joke. I would highly recommend him.
